Six Years That Lit the Sky of Persia
Declaration in Shiraz (1844–1845)
The Báb's ministry lasted only six years, from two hours and eleven minutes after sunset on the 22nd of May 1844, when the twenty-five-year-old Siyyid ‘Alí-Muḥammad disclosed His mission to Mullá Ḥusayn in Shiraz, to His martyrdom in Tabriz on the 9th of July 1850. That night He began revealing the Qayyúmu'l-Asmá'. Over the following months the eighteen Letters of the Living recognized Him one by one and were dispatched across Persia, while the Báb Himself proclaimed His station before the Ka‘bih during pilgrimage to Mecca.
Captivity in the Mountains (1845–1850)
Returning in 1845, He was confined in Shiraz, then briefly sheltered in Isfahan under Manúchihr Khán, and on the governor's death in 1847 despatched north to nine months in Máh-Kú on the Turkish frontier, where He revealed the Persian Bayán — the laws of the new Dispensation and the announcement of "Him Whom God shall make manifest." Transferred in 1848 to Chihríq, He remained two years. During this period the Conference of Badasht inaugurated the break with Islam, and at His examination in Tabriz He made His public Proclamation: "I am, I am, I am the Promised One!"
Martyrdom in Tabriz (9 July 1850)
Suspended with His young disciple Anís before 750 Armenian riflemen under Sám Khán, He was fired upon — but when the smoke cleared the multitude saw only Anís standing bewildered beneath shattered ropes. The Báb was found back in His cell finishing dictation. A second regiment had to be drawn up; the second volley succeeded. The two bodies were so fused they were buried together, and the remains were concealed and moved in secret for fifty-nine years before reaching the resting-place Bahá'u'lláh had designated for them on Mount Carmel.
